After Salton City, Chris hiked into the desert and set up camp in a brake of Cresote at the edge of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. During Chris's stay at his camp, he had to walk 4 miles into town to pick up rice and water. During one trip into town Chris came across a guy named Ron Franz who drove Chris back to his camp. They stayed in touch with one another and soon became great friends where they ate out together and had long conversations. After a few weeks with Ron, Chris decided it was about time to leave for San Diego where he could make enough money to buy equipment for his journey into Alaska. Chris could not find employment so he hopped trains back into the desert where Ron takes him North toward Carthage. When Chris gets to Carthage he sends a letter back to Ron basically saying he should get a life, stop living a normal day after day, get out and see the world, and live in the open wild. Ron soon did everything Chris told him to do, rent an RV set up camp in the desert and live every day differently. Westerburg doesn't want Chris to leave for Alaska just yet because the fields need more work but that doesn't stop Chris and for his final day they all partied hard. When Chris's body was found dead in Alaska, there was a ton of controversial on how he died and so forth. Waterman was an adventurous guy who climbed Mt Everest multiple times. Waterman returned from his last Mt. Everest feat with no money. Later on Waterma ran fro many campaigns like unrestricted sex, legalizing hallucinating drugs, presidency which all turned out bad but did feed the hungry and climbed over many other mountains. McCunn was a thirty-five year old amateur photographer who was going to go out to the middle of nowhere in the wilderness to shoot pictures of wildlife.McCunn never bothered to hire a bush pilot for the return trip so he pretty much starved to death. Not long before he died a plane came souring across the sky but since Chris used the wrong hand signals (one instead of 2 hands) they flew away. Everett was also a man like Chris who took to the roads living of the land/nomad. Everett also embarked on a long odyssey like journeys like McCandless.
